Safety tips for bicycling on roadways

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2024 | Bike Accidents

Many Tennessee motorists may not be aware of the rights of bicyclists to share the road. This can lead to accidents where the bicycle rider is seriously injured due to the negligence of a motorist. Drivers may be distracted or otherwise not paying attention, leading to an accident where an innocent bike rider was doing everything possible to stay safe. Following some basic safety tips before heading out on a bike can help prevent some accidents, but it’s always important to be extra cautious when biking in areas with heavy traffic.

Staying safe

Wearing safety gear like a helmet and gloves can provide protection in case an accident happens. When riding in low light conditions, bright clothing and lights should be used for maximum visibility. One should always check over their bike before each ride to ensure the tires are inflated properly and there are no noticeable problems with the bike.

When sharing the road with motor vehicles, bike riders must always follow the same laws of the road, including traffic signals and stop signs. Bikes should follow the same direction as the flow of traffic and should not pass vehicles on the right. By riding in groups, bike riders become more visible and have help nearby in case an accident does happen.

Injuries after an accident

Being involved in a crash with a motor vehicle due to driver negligence can leave a bike rider with broken bones, internal injuries, and damage to the head, neck, or spine. These injuries can be very serious and may require surgery, physical therapy, and time away from work to recover. Injured victims in Tennessee have the right to seek compensation from a negligent driver to help them recoup their losses and pay for future accident-related expenses.
